Teasing stories

Teasing stories

In addition to his doing pranks, the lord has also allowed the poets who were his devotees to perform pranks with him. Unlike the moon god who made fun of him and was punished, if we make fun of him with the feeling that he is "our loving vigneswarar", he enjoys and listens to these.

The poet kalamega has composed several such allegorically funny poems. In one song, he describes how the goddess mother gave birth to the lord vigneswarar, "kottanaiyum pettral" – what is this one may wonder – how can you call the lord as kottaan (meaning in English)! He means kottu yanai (that is an elephant with tusk). In another song, he makes funs of the lord who has a mouse as his vehicle, saying "a mouse is dragging an elephant?"

Auvaiyar has also implied in a song that she gives more to the lord that what he gives to her, through the words that she would give him four things, if he promises to give her three things in return!

"palum thelithenum pahum parappum ivai

Nalum kalantunakku nan tharuven –

-- nee yenakku sankat tamizh moonrum thaa"

All the rituals we do to pray to him, such as knocking our forehead with the knuckles, holding the ear crossed and doing sit ups, breaking coconut into pieces by smashing it on a stone, and people running to collect it, while some lose without getting any piece are all full of funny pranks.
