Vigneswarar has taken several forms. In these, a selected 16 forms are grouped as shodasa ganapathi. I was wondering if these 16 forms are the 16 names in "shodasa nama". I found that it is not so. In the shodasa nama the third one is kapilar. It means the one who is red in color like beetle nut. But in the shodasa forms the third one is in the form of moon during the rainy season, according to the dhyana sloka. The last but one name the "shodasa nama" is "heramba". However, in the 16 forms, the heramba ganapathi is the 16th form. Like this there are several differences. There is no corresponding form according to the order in the 16 names. So I found that the two have different classifications.
Our topic is now the 16 names.
